Super Spooky Scary Stories ...And That

It's the spookiest time of the year and Paper Jam is back with its spookiest ever comic (well at least since we did Halloween ...And That waaaay back as our second anthology).

Super Spooky Scary Stories ...And That is our seventeenth anthology and it's a cavalcade of spookiness, monsters and mild terrifyingness (nothing too horrific - it's suitable for kids).

Plus, in classic EC comics style, we have hosts for this one - the mysterious fortune teller Ms Fortune, along with her cat and crystal ball, introduces these spine-tingling tales of terror and silliness.

Featuring work from: Amelia Brokenbrow, K. Ben Clarke, Brittany Coxon, Mike Duckett, Dan Fitzgerald, Steven Flanagan, Pauline Holland, Masked Emerald, Gemma Moody, Oscillating Brow, Hannah Potter, Sara Qaed, Paul Thompson, and James Wilkinson.

AND we're having a launch party! Eeee, it's been ages since we've had a proper launch party, but the opportunity to have Halloween party launch seemed too fun to pass up.

Featuring:

First chance to get your mitts on the new comic (should you wish)! - a mere three quid.

Collaborative drawing games! - expect: 'exquisite corpse' monster drawing, cut 'n' paste comic reconfiguration, jam comics. Artistic skill not required, get stuck in, make some monstrosities on paper!

The Creature From The Funk Lagoon's Discotheque of Doooom! - The Creature, Count Funkula and The Texas Funk Soul Massacre will be DJing an eclectic soundtrack of suitably spooky-themed choons all evening, from rotten rock 'n' roll to horrifying hip hop and beyond.

Sweets! Probably.

Bar Loco, Saturday 27th October, 7pm-11pm, FREE.

(Costumes: if you like)

Terry Wiley

Terry Wiley passed away last week. He was a regular Paperjammer, an immensely talented artist, and a lovely chap. The collective won't be the same without him.

Terry had more comics-making experience than the rest of the collective (combined, tbh), having been a veteran self-publisher for many years, producing such excellent, substantial works as Sleaze Castle and Petra Etcetera before we lured him in.

Despite that, he was always modest and happy to be one of the group, consistently adding quality work to the anthologies and enthusiasm for comics to the meetings. Indeed, he immortalised several Paperjammers as supporting characters in his superb graphic novel VerityFair.

That's just how Terry was - ridiculously good at comics but playfully funny and community-minded.

Terry had the strength of ten tigers (and the drawing ability of a wizard)

Terry contributed to every anthology we made after he'd join the collective - from Art ...And That through to Weird Romance ...And That earlier this year. It was always great stuff. Here's a couple of absolute belters (from Newcastle Stories ...And That and History ...And That respectively).

Amongst many moving tributes that have been made to this splendid human and his excellent comics, here's one of the most comprehensive, from Jay Eales and Selina Lock.

If you haven't come across Terry's work before (where have you been??) we heartily recommend Sleaze Castle, VerityFair, and anything else you can get your hands on.

An Archive Issuu

It's a fact that eventually comics go out of print, bought and treasured by a select few, inhabiting shelves, getting read every now and then. But what if I told you that you could read Paper Jam Comics Collective anthologies from the past? What strange magic is this? Behold: click on a comic cover to read the full thing.

If you're a user of Issuu then you can follow us! We plan to release all our old anthologies as they go out of print.

Weird Romance ...And That! Plus: Baltic! Maker Faire!

Paper Jam is go for 2018!

Our new anthology is here! Yes, taking on the themes of both 'weirdness' and 'romance' (and, let's be honest, romance is often pretty weird, right?) in one 40-page beast of an anthology, it's WEIRD ROMANCE ...AND THAT

Featuring comics from...
Anton Brand,  K. Ben Clarke, Callum Costello & Beth Chrisp, Brittany Coxon, Jennifer Coxon, Mike Duckett, Adam Fallows, Dan Fitzgerald, Steve Flanagan, Michael Gonson, Brett Halliwell, Pauline Holland, Noah McKenzie, Eltje Müller-Stewart, Oscillating Brow, Terry Wiley.

Where can you get this beauty? Well, our webshop and at Travelling Man at some point soon, but we'll be launching it at two events:

ONE! The Baltic Self-Publishing Artists' Market http://baltic.art/whats-on/artists-market

This Saturday, at the Baltic, a whole load of excellent artists, free.

TWO! The Maker Faire https://makerfaireuk.com/

Saturday and Sunday 28th & 29th April, at Life Science Centre, a whole load of excellent scientists and makers-of-things of all kinds. Always full of mind-blowing technological fun.

And this year, Paper Jam is going high-tech! Paul Thompson (artist, long-standing paperjammer, general awesome dude) has constructed... A PRINTER MADE OF LEGO THAT WILL PRINT A RANDOM PAGE LAYOUT OF COMIC PANELS:

See yous then.

2017: A Year in Things We Did

It has been a year. A good year.

Here are some things that happened.

January

We turned 10.

The Paper Jam Comics Collective celebrated 10 years of comics making fun.

February

And we attended Biblio-Con, we made some great friends there.

March

We invaded The Exchange in North Shields for their Originals event, a great afternoon of local songwriters.
Oscillating Brow took PJCC on the road, all the way up to Dunfermline Comic Con.

We launched our first full colour comic, Amazing Adventure Comics Machine ... and that. A comic aimed at younger folks.

The comic was launched at the one and only Canny Comic Con.

April

Maker Faire. We love the Maker Faire.
We made some great mini comics, then announced our new anthology.

May

On the road again, to Scribblecon. This time thanks to Mike D.
More things took place at The Exchange in North Shields.

June

Wonderlands! A great day with amazing comics creators and best of all, just one city over.
We also started to see the first pages for our next anthology. Bad Decisions... and that. This one's by Mike D.

July

Paper Jam celebrated Small Press Day 2017 in good company at Pocket Geek, a funky little convention in Gateshead.

August

What happened in August? The deadline for Bad Decisions was reached and we got to behind the scenes work to print it. And we got a lovely review in Broken Frontier for Amazing Adventure Comics Machine.

September

Much fun was had.

October

By now you've noticed that we should have been talking about these things all year round. We're not the best at keeping our blog updated. If you want the most up to date happenings you should probably follow us on Twitter.

Anyway, back to October.

We tackled the hard stuff, drawing hands and feet. Feet are harder.
And we launched Bad Decisions ... and that.

Specifically, we launched it at our second appearance at Tyne Bank Brewery's market.

And we got another review! This one from a younger reader.

Plus Steven Flanagan drew us while at the Tyne Bank.

November

We held our first full meeting at Bar Loco, it's a lovely place. And I finally got round to putting our new anthology on the web shop.

And we got a new folder.

December

We uploaded some cracking 24 minute comics and jam comics to our jams blog.

And we schemed and plotted the next anthology. We're not 100% sure what it's all about yet but it appears to have a romance theme.

So that was it. That was 2017. PJCC has accomplished many things. Surviving its 11th year and now into its 12th. What adventures will 2018 hold?

Well, our first adventure is the first meeting of the year, 11th January. In Bar Loco from 7ish. Top floor.
