I've been part of Paper Jam since it started (in January 2007 - gosh, I feel old), and, due to that, have become The Guy Who Sends The Emails. I have had the privilege of seeing Paper Jam do quite a lot of stuff (both directly and in adjacent projects like Canny Comic Con and Newcastle Science Comic), and though the exact constituent people vary over time - the stuff works on the basic principle of people getting stuck in and having a nice time.

Over the last year, Paper Jam has slowly got going again, new folk have got involved, and this culminated in making The Sea ...And That, our first anthology since 2019. Our launch party yesterday was A DELIGHT.

It's strange how much my sense of who I am is tied up with doing daft comics and arts stuff. The last few years have been tough for many people in many ways but one thing I'd missed more than anything is doing stuff like this. There have been points where I didn't think I'd' do them again. So it was genuinely moving to be at the launch yesterday and feeling the buzz of just people clarting about drawing and chatting and reading comics (and getting temporary tattoos of boats).

I'd like to thank everyone who attended, it was lovely to see so many folks getting along (travelling distance, amending other plans, dodging covid, dragging members of their family along, etc) to say hello, pick up our comics, draw some seamonsters. And huge respect to all fellow Paper Jammers who contributed to the anthology or helped with the running of yesterday, I am so proud of the comic and the event and you all. Apologies to anyone if I was flaky and didn't chat enough, I was a bit overwhelmed (and had had some beer), but I really do appreciate all of yous turning out, was wonderful to see everyone.

Anyone who came along or was involved in any way: it happened because you helped make it happen.

Anyway, some of the amazing results of the drawing games shenanigans:

SEAMONSTERS!

AQUARIUM!

BROKEN TELEPHONE!

(This is hard to represent, might do a video or something, come along to the meeting to see it!)

MEGA JAM!

Outstanding.

On the theme of things happening if people make them happen, here' a bit of info about us, and about places and groups we like:

Paper Jam meets monthly on the second Thursday of each month at the Split Chimp micropub in Newcastle (near the station). Loads of different creators interpreting the topic of the sea in loads of different ways!

And to celebrate, we'll be having a launch party at the fantastic Laurels arts venue in Whitley Bay (a mere few minutes walk from THE ACTUAL SEA).

It's Saturday 13th May (Eurovision day, for those that observe it), from 1pm to 6pm(ish).

It's free in! It'd be nice if you fancy buying the comic (four quid - or less if buying as part of a bargainous multi-buy deal with some of our older anthologies!) but honestly no pressure. Drop by, say hello, see what we're all about.

Comics will be for sale! Obviously The Sea ...And That, but our previous anthologies - covering a wide variety of topics, and many comics by many individual creators from within the collective.

Collaborative drawing games! No skill required! Various art jams, and stupid games, drawing sea-monsters or something! "Oh, I can't draw" - NO, I BET YOU CAN! YOU CAN! Let's go! (Though no pressure if you really don't want to, but honestly, our whole vibe is that everyone can get involved and drawing and comics are fun)

Sea-themed playlist! Only the most nautical of tracks!

Beverages!

Suitable for kids! While the anthology is aimed at adults, we do have kid-friendly comics and the drawing games and whatnot will be fine for bairns.

There will be other opportunities to pick up this fine publication, but this will be THE BEST and THE CLOSEST TO THE SEA (AND FISH AND CHIPS ETC).

Here's the full contents! It’s called Abigail and Caurinus: Plague’s Beginning. The story sees the young Abigail Winters alongside the Plague Doctor, Edgar Caurinus, as the two of them work together to stop a deadly plague that spawns terrible monsters. It's certainly the first time we've gone more than a couple of months between meetings. Weird times. I hope you're doing okay.

However! We're still up to comics stuff! Check out our Paper Jams sketch blog for the comics and sketches the group come up with on a regular basis, at the moment based on fairly arbitrary monthly themes!

Interested in getting involved? Get in touch! Drop us an email or say hello on Twitter!

Keep drawing!

Our provisional new home: The Bridge Hotel (which is primarily a pub not a hotel, situated just beside the High Level Bridge and Newcastle Castle).

Our February meeting (on 13th February evening) will be there. We'll assemble from 6.00 to 6.30ish in the main bar downstairs then at around 6.30 head upstairs to the room we've booked (note: there's two rooms, ours is the one where there ISN'T a band practicing).

If all goes well, we'll make it our regular meeting place.

Anyone in Newcastle interested in making comics, whatever your previous experience, just come along. We chat, we draw, we try and help each other make better comics. Any queries beforehand, do fee free to email us.

We've also started a monthly, themed comic-drawing challenge. Sort of like mini anthologies without the hassle of printing. Our first theme was 'new' - check out the results here https://papercomicjams.blogspot.com/2020/01/monthly-comic-challenge-new.html.
First up, the inaugural Make & Print Market: Saturday 30th March, 9am-5pm, within Newcastle's Grainger Market. It's a spin-off of the successful long-running 'first Saturday of the month' Make & Mend Market, which is always full of interesting art and craft works, and this special event (set to run quarterly) is focused more specifically on print media, so is sure to be full of all kinds of quality gear.

Then in April, it's the Baltic Self-Publishing Artists' Market 2019: 27th April,11am-6pm, in the BALTIC gallery just on the Gateshead side of the Tyne. We had a great day at this last year and are again expecting excellent varied work from a wide range of creators.

Pretty cool and highbrow eh? Come to both events, they're free entry and they'll be class. And come and say 'hi' to us (we'll be the ones bringing the tone down).PJCC HQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10787600977067743229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9210292813139940960.post-1842548579979152472019-01-07T09:37:00.003+00:002019-01-07T09:37:42.670+00:00Paper Jam: some stuff we did, 20182018! A bit of a stupid year in many ways but Paper Jam did some good stuff.

We released two anthologies! Weird Romance ...And That and Super Spooky Scary Stories ...And That. Full of quality!

Sadly, long time Paperjammer and general small press comics legend Terry Wiley died this year. Weird Romance was the last of our anthologies to benefit from a contribution from him.

Terry enriched the group and our comics over the years, and if you'd like to read some of our older anthologies, featuring work from Terry and many many other Paperjammers past and present, we've made several of our out-of-print anthologies available to read free on t'internet. Now including our all-time bestseller, Newcastle ...And That.

In other 2018 news...

Paul invented a Lego robot that draws randomised comics page panel layouts (became an instant favourite with young 'uns at events it was exhibited at).

Connected to that, we won an award! Us! An award! It was a prestigious 'Maker of Merit' ribbon at the Maker Faire:

Mike ran an arts residency in the Grainger Market for most of the latter half of the year, organising all kinds of exciting projects - including a 12-hour comic challenge that several of us took part in.

We attended many varied events in 2018, including: the Baltic Small Press Artists Market, Maker Faire, Glenrothes Comic Con, Bensham Grove's Midsummer Magic and Night Market, the Make & Mend Market (on Small Press Day), the Great Exhibition of the North Family Expo, Tynemouth Market Book Fair, Kommunity Night Market, our own Halloween party comic launch, Grainger Market Night Market, and the Verbal Remedy Festival of the Zine.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat, do some drawing, buy some of our dumb comics; you're fabulous.

2018 was also the first full year that Paper Jam has been based at Bar Loco. It has proved to be just the home we were looking for when we moved from Travelling Man.
If you're interested in getting involved, meeting artists, contributing to anthologies (artistic finesse non-essential) then come and say hi: every second Thursday of each month, Bar Loco, top floor, from 6.30. First meeting: 10th January!

Super Spooky Scary Stories ...And That is our seventeenth anthology and it's a cavalcade of spookiness, monsters and mild terrifyingness (nothing too horrific - it's suitable for kids).

Plus, in classic EC comics style, we have hosts for this one - the mysterious fortune teller Ms Fortune, along with her cat and crystal ball, introduces these spine-tingling tales of terror and silliness.

Featuring work from: Amelia Brokenbrow, K. Ben Clarke, Brittany Coxon, Mike Duckett, Dan Fitzgerald, Steven Flanagan, Pauline Holland, Masked Emerald, Gemma Moody, Oscillating Brow, Hannah Potter, Sara Qaed, Paul Thompson, and James Wilkinson.

AND we're having a launch party! Eeee, it's been ages since we've had a proper launch party, but the opportunity to have Halloween party launch seemed too fun to pass up.

Featuring:

First chance to get your mitts on the new comic (should you wish)! - a mere three quid.

Collaborative drawing games! - expect: 'exquisite corpse' monster drawing, cut 'n' paste comic reconfiguration, jam comics. Artistic skill not required, get stuck in, make some monstrosities on paper!

The Creature From The Funk Lagoon's Discotheque of Doooom! - The Creature, Count Funkula and The Texas Funk Soul Massacre will be DJing an eclectic soundtrack of suitably spooky-themed choons all evening, from rotten rock 'n' roll to horrifying hip hop and beyond.

Sweets! Probably.
He was a regular Paperjammer, an immensely talented artist, and a lovely chap. The collective won't be the same without him.

Terry had more comics-making experience than the rest of the collective (combined, tbh), having been a veteran self-publisher for many years, producing such excellent, substantial works as Sleaze Castle and Petra Etcetera before we lured him in.

Despite that, he was always modest and happy to be one of the group, consistently adding quality work to the anthologies and enthusiasm for comics to the meetings. Indeed, he immortalised several Paperjammers as supporting characters in his superb graphic novel VerityFair.

That's just how Terry was - ridiculously good at comics but playfully funny and community-minded.
Terry contributed to every anthology we made after he'd join the collective - from Art ...And That through to Weird Romance ...And That earlier this year. It was always great stuff. And we schemed and plotted the next anthology. We're not 100% sure what it's all about yet but it appears to have a romance theme.

So that was it. That was 2017. PJCC has accomplished many things. Surviving its 11th year and now into its 12th. What adventures will 2018 hold?

Well, our first adventure is the first meeting of the year, 11th January. In Bar Loco from 7ish. Top floor.

The Paper Jam Comics Collective will no longer meet at Travelling Man comic shop.
The creation of Paper Jam was rooted in Travelling Man and it has been home for the collective for over a decade. However, it's only natural that things change and for a range of practical reasons, it's no longer a suitable place for Paper Jam to meet.

Paper Jam would like to thank Travelling Man and its staff for accommodating our meetings for the last ten years and wish it well with its other endeavours. It remains a tip top comic shop - and of course we'll continue to sell our anthologies in its small press section.

WELL WHERE THE HECK WILL PAPER JAM MEET?
Bar Loco (bar/gig venue/arts hub/general cool place) is where we're trying out, at least for the rest of this year, so on Thursday 9th November and Thursday 14th December 2017 (still from 6.30), that's definitely where we'll be (upstairs - either first or second floor).

We'll see how that goes and decide about continuing that into 2018 (and whether the fourth Thursday pub jams will move there too, how that'll work, etcetera). Keep an eye here and on our Twitter account and Facebook group for up to date info about what is happening where and when.PJCC HQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10787600977067743229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9210292813139940960.post-74622647495428229362017-10-18T13:21:00.000+01:002017-10-18T16:42:38.133+01:00Bad Decisions ...And ThatThe Paper Jam Comics Collective are proud to present their fifteenth anthology, Bad Decision ...And That!
A bumper collection of bad-decision-themed comics from: Anton Brand, K. Ben Clarke, Brittany Coxon, Jennifer Coxon, M. Duckett, Daniel Fitzgerald, Steven Flanagan, Michael Gonson, Dave Green, Brett Halliwell, Noah McKenzie, Janis Meißner, Gemma Moody, Eltje Müller-Stewart, Oscillating Brow, Paul Thompson, and Terry Wiley.

Job applications! Pheromones! Fish dirigible carnage! Unwise tattoos! Pop music! Existential angst! Cats! All this and more is explored within these highly (ehhh, maybe) insightful pages.
We can't guarantee that after reading it, you'll be making good decision, but we feel you'll at least be slightly more knowledgeable about many and varied bad ones.

We're making the good decision to launch this beauty at the lovely Tyne Bank Brewery art/vinyl/comics market on Saturday (21st October) from noon.
As well as the new comic, we'll have our other comics anthologies (themed around food, history, making stuff, Newcastle and adventure), plus art and comics from creators including Britt Coxon (paper cut art geometric shape kits and mini-comic bundles), Jennifer Coxon (custom art masks), Eltje Müller-Stewart (expressionist Geordie kitchen sink adventures of the irrepressible Johnathan and his pyromaniacal best mate Declan) , Oscillating Brow (a bunch of tiny daft comics about cake, heartbreak, dance-offs, etc), Paul Thompson (monster-themed art book Invisible Beasts, fantasy noir comics), The Analogue Press (music-themed comics anthology Radio On), Gemma Moody (supervillain romance comics) AND we'll be running a bunch of drawing games for everyone to get involved with - PREPARE TO COMIC JAM!
You know what goes great together? COMICS and BEER. This is a proven fact.

On Saturday 16th September we'll be around at Tyne Bank Brewery. They make beer, we make comics. I mean, to be honest, they're a bit more professional about making beer than we are about making comics, but it still feels an excellent combination. Their brewery tap (just on the outskirts of Ouseburn) is a lovely space (with great beverages, obviously), so why not come and check it out.

As well as hawking a load of splendid comics, we'll be running drawing games and just generally chatting on to folks (mostly touting our very-nearly-complete-and-super-excellent new anthology Bad Decisions ...And That, out soon).

And you know what else goes well with COMICS and BEER? MUSIC, ART, and FOOD! That's all covered too! There'll be a Long Play Café vinyl sale and DJ sets, Mushroom Works and Nowt Special artists, and filthy burger specialists Fat Hippo.

All grand stuff - get it in your diary.

Ooh, also, our Amazing Adventure Comics Machine ...And That anthology was recently reviewed by Andy Oliver over at Broken Frontier - "a welcome reminder of the grassroots community spirit of the small press" YEAH! THAT'S HOW WE ROLL!
Paper Jam will be celebrating the former by being at the latter!

Check out some top quality comics and art from Brittany Coxon, En Gingerboom, Paul Thompson, and more – including Paper Jam’s latest team anthology The Amazing Adventure Comics Machine …And That. In addition to having wondrous things for sale, we’ll be demonstrating our verbosity (or just making fools of ourselves) taking on the Anime Attacks crew in another session of daft panel game ‘Just A Comics Minute’, and we’ll be running collaborative drawing games throughout the day, hoping for participation from everyone – whatever your level of experience, everyone can do comics!

Of course, there's tonnes of other varied interesting stuff afoot at Pocket Geek - Gaming! Anime! Cosplay! Workshops! Including one on visual narrative by En, which is sure to be superb:
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the June meeting (8th June), as with the May meeting, will be in the Mile Castle pub, just down the road from Travelling Man. We'll try and book tables. Highly likely to be on the top floor.
Hopefully, back at Travelling Man for July meeting.PJCC HQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10787600977067743229noreply@blogger.com0
