Hello all! In a culture of fear, it is the duty of the common man to impose order. To this end, I propose that Paper Jam meetings from this moment on are held on the 2nd and 4th thursdays of a month. This has the advantage of being nice and regular and non-confusing, and much easier to inform new faces about. SOOOOO... the next meeting will be Thursday 12th January. 6.30ish at TM Newcastle. Spread the word, ya mamma-jammas!

Alcohol...And That

The Paper Jam Comics Collective hasn’t done an anthology in a while.
People have all kinds of exciting projects of their own going on, but
we all forgot to keep it real and bust out some team awesomeness in a
new ...And That. So, to remedy that, we’re going to ruddy do one!

Having done: miscellaneous, Halloween, ‘You will have to wait’,
Robots, children’s comics, Art and History, what’s next? Well, after
some discussion, the consensus has fallen on ‘Alcohol’. The fact that
the decision was made in a pub had nothing to do with this.

So submissions are open! Usual criteria apply: it’s open to anyone
who’s a Paper Jammer (i.e. been to a few meetings at some point), you
can do one or two pages, and team ups are allowed and encouraged (in
which case you can combine page allocations if you want to do
something a bit longer).

We’re looking to go a bit old-school on this one after the large
format extravaganzas we’ve had recently, so it’ll be A5 black and
white (well, greyscale), with the cover either b&w too or maybe colour
depending on how the Collective finances are looking. Remember to leave about a centimetre of white space around the edge of your page so nothing gets cropped off!

Content: it would be quite a nice linking factor if everyone’s stories
could be based on a particular type of alcoholic beverage, so aim for
that (but don’t worry too much about it, or what anyone else is doing,
we could easily have ‘Gin’ and ‘More Gin’ for example!) Interpret the
theme however you like, keep it vaguely clean (usual Paper Jam tone: a
bit of rudeness is permissible but nothing too extreme), and come up
with something great.

Timescale: The official "sharing ideas/drawings" meeting will be Thursday 18th August, 6:30pm onwards at Travelling Man (free entry, 18+ only), and the deadline for all submissions will be the following meeting, Thursday 1st September, same spiel. You can either bring in your hard copies (no bigger than A3 per side, and nothing weirdly shaped - i.e. stick to "A-Sizes" like A5, A4 etc.) or you can e-mail your submission, preferably as a .png or .pdf file of no greater than 300dpi, to tmne_smallpress@yahoo.co.uk

Anyone with brilliant ideas about format or covers and suchlike, tell
everyone at the next meeting or in the blog comments below.

Art...And That, the Empty Shop-funded anthology we put out at the end of last summer, has been reviewed by Stacey Whittle on the Small Press Big Mouth podcast. Amongst the lovely things she said about the comic, was this snippet:

"I have to say, of all the Paper Jam anthologies, this is the one with the highest standard I think. People have all pulled something out of the bag for this one and I was really very impressed by the quality of every story..."

Thought Bubble 2010

The Paper Jam Comics Collective made themselves known at last month's Thought Bubble convention in Leeds, taking over an entire row of tables. Group members exhibiting were Ben Clark, Paul Thompson, Daniel Clifford, Martin Newman, Terry Wiley, Gary Bainbridge, Andy Waugh, Jack Fallows and, running the dedicated PJCC table, Brittany Coxon and James Cornell. Mike was there too, running the Travelling Man table.

24 Hour Comic

Organised by Martin Newman, members of the PJCC will expand our 24 remit beyond the 24 minute comic and once more take part in 24 Hour Comics Day .

From the 09h00 on the 2nd of October to 09h00 on the 3rd of October, we will suffer once more, but we will prevail, we will have 24 pages of comics, each, in 24 hours.

"Art...And That" Launch - The Aftermath

A little late, I know, but here is a rundown of the recent launch of our newest anthology Art...And That. The outside-funded anthology marked a new way of us producing work and the launch party followed suit, taking us away from the pub and into the art gallery, exposing our work to a new clientele.

And so, a few Fridays back, the majority of the PJCC camped off to the DLI Museum & Art Gallery in Durham, where the exhibition What Are You Like? was officially opened and previewed to invited guests.

Complimenting this was, of course, the release of our specially-commissioned anthology, as well as the unveiling of exhibitions by the local illustration group Set Of Drawers...

...and a temporary base for collection of the Salford Zine Library (which amongst its works features titles by PJCC members Jack Fallows and Andy Waugh).

Amongst all the wine, networking and sophisticated art appreciating, there was also a large-scale group game of Pictionary - appallingly attempted by nominated PJCC representative Andy. After this, the evening's entertainment relocated to Empty Shop HQ for a special exhibition by their in-house artist group The Freebirds, poetry readings and an interactive exhibition by the touring Beermat Show.

All in all a cracking night. It was truly an honour and a privilege to be featured alongside such talented folks. A big thanks goes to the DLI for having us and our friends at Empty Shop for funding the anthology. The exhibition runs until the 5th of September and there are copies of Art...And That for sale there while stocks last.

Made In Newcastle

The Paper Jam Comics Collective are proud to be a part of the Made In Newcastle shop after making friends with the Newcastle Crafts Mafia at the Kite Festival.

MIN occupies a four story empty shop on Nun Street, which includes a shop, an informal meeting area, a workshop space and a gallery, ran as a collective and selling all kinds of beautiful and interesting work that is of course made in Newcastle. It now sells the comics of the Paper Jam Comics Collective - both our '...and That' anthologies and individual books.

The shop opening last weekend was an enormous success, and featured a doodle wall which the PJCC took to like ducks to water. If you're in the area, you should stop by.

Friendship Festival Redux

The PJCC were at the International Friendship Festival in Washington last weekend: Britt, Paul, Martin, Gary, Oscillating Brow, Stacey and Christian Kerr were all out and about.

This is a really great event, and we were in a tent with a combination of book sellers and craftspeople selling fantastic cakes, dolls and the like. Thanks to Leonie O'Moore for helping us get organized, and thanks to everyone who stopped by our table and checked out our comics.

A fair few comics were sold, and were really pleased that Space Monkey went down well as it was conceived at the same event last year, when we discovered that we had embarrassingly little of interest to kids.

We also made some new friends: Made in Newcastle and the Newcastle Crafts Mafia - more on these fantastic people shortly!

International Friendship Festival 2010

The P.J.C.C. will be out and about in Washington this weekend at the International Friendship Festival.

We had a great time there last year, when despite having a great time, we really didn't have much to interest kids. This year, everything changes: as well as our usual collection of comics and zines, we have the excellent SpaceMonkey Anthology.

EGO - A Celebration of Differences

Daniel, Britt, Jack and Paul attended the EGO festival in Durham, sold some comics, met some lovely people and presided over a lot of young people drawing comics, courtesy of Jack and Daniel's Comic Book Workshops who now have a blog! Some very interesting, original and occasionally alarming characters and situations were devised.

Art...And That - Deadline Reminder!

Art...And That is coming together nicely - we have a cover now, courtesy of Mr. Gary Bainbridge. And isn't it gorgeous? Thanks Gary! If you want in on the project, you've got but 10 hours left to e-mail your submission to Andy . Less if you want to submit a hard copy at the next meeting (6.30pm tonight).

To give you a flavour of the competition, here is a little sampler of some of the submissions thus far...

EGO festival, Durham

The PJCC will at the EGO festival on Sunday 27th of June - a daylong event celebrating unique North East talent and held at Durham live lounge.

The EGO festival is a free family event with performances such as dance troupes, youth theatres, fashion shows and music as well as stalls displaying Artists work including our own fine comics.

Jack & Daniel's Comic Book Workshops will also have lots of comics worksheets - so everyone can join the fun!

Music Anthology Update!

Just so you don't think this idea has evaporated, I thought I'd give you all an update. I'm talking to more bands about getting involved with this project for PJCC members who haven't hooked up with musicians yet, I'm contacted venues about hosting a launch gig and simultaneous gallery show, and I'm quite fond of the idea of making the format of the anthology 7" single size, or at least a square so we can make it look like a record!

Art...And That (special anthology brief)

Attention all Paper Jammers - the PJCC is collaborating with Empty Shop and the DLI gallery in Durham for their forthcoming hosting of the "What Are You Like?" exhibition in July. The exhibition contains work from an impressive array of artists and illustrators, including David Shrigley, Eric Carle, Jan Pienkowski and Quentin Blake.

As part of Empty Shop's involvement, they are providing complete funding for a brand spanking new ...And That anthology to be sold at the DLI and any additional events. I shouldn't need to hammer home how good an opportunity this is to get involved in the larger North East artistic community and spread the good name of Paper Jam to a new audience.

So, without further ado, the brief for the next anthology is...

ART...AND THAT

It's quite simple. Pick your favourite artist, artistic movement or piece of art and do a comic about it. This can include anything from paintings, to photography, to sculpture and be about classical or modern art (and everything in between). Go as wild as you like with it. However, bare in mind that this is being specifically produced for a mainstream art crowd. So...

1) Keep it clean. No swearing or sex. If you're doing a piece about Botticelli's Venus, then it's understood that there'd be a nude lady in there. Just keep it tasteful.

2) Keep it accessible. I know we're all comic fans, but let's not have an anthology full of comics about Jack Kirby or Chris Ware, please. It's going in a mainstream gallery and hoping to appeal to a mainstream audience, so let's look to classical or modern art first before dipping into back issues of Fantasic Four for inspiration. I know this will wind up a few people and likely kick off a "comics as acceptable art" debate, but tough. We can do a "comics as acceptable art" themed anthology some other time.

Other than those restrictions, your submission can be as irreverent and off-the-wall as you like.

There's only ONE PAGE per member this time, instead of two, but as usual you can collaborate with others to raise your page count if you wish. The whole thing will be A4 and B&W, with the aim to have a colour cover. The funding is limited, so we're trying to do as much with it as possible (hence the limited page allocation).

This anthology brief will be verbally announced at the next meeting on Thursday 3rd June and the deadline for submissions will be at the following meeting on Thursday 17th June. There is a tight schedule on this one, so there will be none of the late allowances given on History...And That. We're giving you a week's bonus time right now, so that's three weeks to do one page.

Could you also submit the credits for the piece, along with a web/e-mail address (at your discretion) for inclusion along the bottom of your piece? Ta, muchly.

Andy Waugh is the go-to guy on this project, so if you could e-mail any submissions to him here, that would be most helpful.

When you know what your subject is, please post it as a comment below, so we can see how things are shaping up on the project. Now...LET'S GET CRACKING!

UPDATE: Carlo at Empty Shop has suggested that if anyone is stuck for inspiration, then it might be an idea to check out the famous artists/designers/illustrators/photographers who are taking part in the exhibition and do a strip about one of them. Some of them are on the site here, if you want a look.

History...And That (update)

The group's next anthology, the historian-bating 'History...And That', is nearing completion. So far, we have around half the submissions, with the tardier members handing in by next Thursday. So if you're one of those late-comers - get to it!

In the book so far are tales of war, love, murder, insanity, exploration and scientific discovery. Plus there's promise of immense battles and tales from before and beyond history to come. In the meantime, here's a peek at the cover, a re-mix by Andy Waugh of Christian Kerr's amazing line-art submission...

Book Club Clubbing Club Re-Launch

Once upon a time the PJCC did a regular book club at its meetings, and we've decided to start doing this again because it was tons of fun. The first book we'll all be purchasing and going away to read will be Book of Lists by Paul Rainey (small press). The book costs £10.95 and can be grabbed from the small press section at Travelling Man. We'll be getting more copies in this week, so if you come in and there are none just pop back later! We'll be reading this one for the Comics Evening on 6th April, 6:30pm onwards at Travelling Man.

Music...and that

Hello All,

This summer, the PJCC will be launching a music-themed anthology on the unsuspecting public. The form of this item and its launch are still undecided, but make no mistake - it will be epic. If you think this is something you'd like to get involved with, here's what you need to do:

1) Find an unsigned band, local or otherwise, and ask them if you could use one or more of their songs as a theme/stimulus/inspiration for your comic. Further to that, if they are local, ask them if they'd be up for playing at the launch event too. Make sure you include this, or your own version of when asking:

"The Paper Jam Comics Collective is a non-profit creative community, so all money made from the anthology and launch event will be put into our next project. For that reason, we can't offer bands any money for the use of their music, or for their live performances. However, the collective will cover the cost of equipment hire and of course the cost of printing the comic and burning the CDs. We're hoping this will be a mutually-beneficial endeavour, and it will generate a lot of exposure for the bands involved as well as the comic book artists. Please verify that you understand and agree with these terms so that everyone is on the same page."

2) E-mail me when you've had a "yes" answer from a band, or if you want to submit but can't find a band. That means I can hook people up and make a "playlist" if you like, so we know that nobody is doing the same band twice and we can get an idea of numbers. We haven't got a definite deadline or format for submissions yet, but I will be releasing one shortly after our History...and that anthology has been released, so point number three:

P.R.E.S.S. at Washington Arts Centre (follow-up)

There was a whole crowd of Paper Jam members at the P.R.E.S.S. event at Washington Arts Centre yesterday. Andy and Gary were minding the stall all day, with support and nattering from Paul, Martin, Oscillating Brow and Mike D.

Business was slow (as is usually the nature of these things), but everyone who came was enthusiastic for the cause of independent publishing, and we made a few sales and had a lot of nice chats with people. Other stalls included comics, independent book publishers (of everything from poetry to horror fiction to children's books), and gorgeous art books (literally - books made into art). Mike D also produced and set up a wonderful zine trail especially for the event, which had inquisitive parties scouting the building for pages of a miniature zine.

Representatives of top London comics and zine team We Are Words + Pictures were there selling copies of their anthologies and individual works. It was a pleasure to have a natter with them and force them to buy some of our stuff.

Next Anthology : History ... and that

Our next anthology is 'History... And That'.

We intend to detail (in chronological order) the most noteable moments in history, from the Big Bang to the End Of The World (which is in a couple of years if you believe the Mayans). You can choose any time period you like, whether that be Ancient Greece, or the lesson you once had on Ancient Greece at school. Be as frivolous with the facts as you like - this isn't a textbook. Your task is to (as Jack has previously noted) take the theme and milk its deliciously open-ended teets like a true time-travelling farmer!

Just let us know (in the comments or by email) which period of history you'll be going for, as we'd like to avoid too much duplication.

The deadline for submissions is 6:30 on Thursday 6th May, bring your work to our regular meeting in Travelling Man Newcastle on Grainger street, drop it off in the shop before then or email it to: tmne_smallpress@yahoo.co.uk

This one will be A4 and black and white, and the usual rules apply - two pages per person (so a writer/artist team could have 4 pages in total). Leave a minimum of a 1cm border to allow for possible cropping when we get this to print.

Hi-Ex Aftermath

Hi-Ex was, as you’re surely aware by now, the place to be last weekend.

Organised by artist Vicky Stonebridge and writer/editor Richmond Clements, Hi-Ex has gained a reputation for being one of the friendliest Comic Conventions in the land.

The Paper Jam Comics Collective had a table there for the first time, donated by Paul Scott of OmniVistaScope and Solar Wind fame. He couldn’t make it, we could. We will give him his table cloth back in the fullness of time.

As well as all five issues of OVS, our table consisted of the following:

Oscillating Brow: Tales of Extraordinariness, Cat
Ben Clark: Spine Chillers
Jack Fallows: Big Bang

We sold some of the above. It looked like this:

More importantly, we met some fantastic people, attended some excellent panels, drank some beer and contributed to the various jam comics going round the hotel bar in the evening. I've never seen so many comic fans and professionals in a single Chinese buffet before.

Mad props to everyone we met and all the good people selling their wares, especially to Dave Evans (Bolt01), titan of UK small press science fiction anthologies, who was selling bucketloads of Futurequake and Zarjaz to the 2000 AD-hungry crowd, many of whom had traveled across the Cursed Earth itself to attend.

The panels were all intimate, informal and good fun. Thanks to Stacey Whittle (Small Press Big Mouth) and Terry Martin (Murky Depths) for looking after our wares while the PJCC attended a few of the talks.

The panels we saw covered the Horror Genre in comics, a Charity Auction, the quite, quite mad Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre Company, the enduring success of 2000AD and an audience with the Legend Cam Kennedy. There was a lot more, and the PJCC didn't get near the Judge Dredd Role Playing area, which we'd wanted to.

A weekend just wasn't enough to be honest. Thanks again to Vicky and Richmond. The days were just packed.

Hi-Ex 2010

24 Hour Comic Challenge

As is our way, we neglected to mention the EPIC 24 Hour Comic Challenge!

On March 13th and 14th, the PJCC were represented at the P.R.E.S.S. / Learning Revolution 24 Hour Comic Challenge at the Tyneside Cinema by Lily, Martin, Jack, Chris and Paul.

We won.

Okay, everyone sitting at home wondering how they can get involved in the creativity, here are some important dates for your calendar:

Thursday 11th March 6:30pm onwards at Travelling Man
A Comics Evening there will be, but we're also asking everyone to have a go at sketching out a logo for the collective which should read "Paper Jam Comics Collective" and a logo to use on the front of all of our anthologies which should read "...and that" (drawing skills not required!) We've been in need of both of these for a long time, so it's time to get one sorted and start getting some propaganda on the go!

Thursday 25th March 6:30pm onwards at Travelling Man
Again, a Comics Evening shall be in progress, but this will also be mini-deadline number one for our music themed anthology. If you want to submit a strip, please approach an unsigned band (local or otherwise) and ask if you can use one of their songs as a template/stimulus/inspiration/theme for your comic and if they would be willing to submit the track to a mix CD that we would attach to the comic. As well this, could you also ask if they would be willing to play a short set at an event in the summer for its launch, which isn't necessary but would be awesome. There are a few fiddly bits that they need to know, which shouldn't really be of any concern, but just to avoid any problems, please include this (or your own version of) when asking bands:

"The Paper Jam Comics Collective is a non-profit creative community, so all money made from the anthology and launch event will be put into our next project. For that reason, we can't offer bands any money for the use of their music, or for their live performances. However, the collective will cover the cost of equipment hire and of course the cost of printing the comic and burning the CDs. We're hoping this will be a mutually-beneficial endeavour, and it will generate a lot of exposure for the bands involved as well as the comic book artists. Please verify that you understand and agree with these terms so that everyone is on the same page."

If everyone could have a band on board by this meeting that would be awesome, and don't forget that there are bands within the collective (who probably won't be approaching themselves!), if you're struggling to think of anyone. If you feel like you want to get involved but finding a band is too much hassle, I'll find one for you! One you'll like as well!

The first deadline for our NEW ANTHOLOGY will be announced at this meeting too, here are some details on that:

History... and that
This anthology does exactly what it says on the tin. The theme is history. Any point of it you choose, whether that be Ancient Greece, or the lesson you once had on Ancient Greece at school. Your task is to take that theme and milk its deliciously open-ended teets like a true time-travelling farmer! Y'hear?! The launch event will be awesome, and there's already been talk (amongst me and myself) of a history-themed fancy dress competition. Watch this space!

Mini-Biographies
For the purpose of press releases and for mini-featurettes that we hope to post weekly on the blog, please could anyone willing submit a short biography about yourself, your accomplishments, the things you've had published, self-published or reviewed. The most important nuggets about who you are and why you come down to our meetings, are on the mailing list and/or read this blog basically! Send them through anytime to tmne_smallpress@yahoo.co.uk but please don't exceed 500 words, and if possible try to make it more like 200-300! Talk about blowing your own horn...geez.

THE PAPER JAM COMICS COLLECTIVE IS (roughly) THREE YEARS OLD!

And to celebrate we're going to have a right old knees up round the Old Joanna round at The Telegraph on Thursday 18th February from 7:30pm onwards.

Entry fee of £3 will get you:

- Fantastic live music from the likes of The Stillwells, Squares, Sleepwalk and assorted other local folks, including a potential comics-creator supergroup that could make all other comics-creator supergroups look MERELY ADEQUATE!

- Free copy of the latest all-killer-no-filler anthology from the Paper Jam Comics Collective, SPACE MONKEY... AND THAT. Our latest venture is all ages big format full colour cover fun with a capital F! We didn't quite get to have a proper launch for this one, so let's celebrate it with some vigour!

'We Are Open' Event

All going well, the Paper Jam Comics Collective will have goods for sale as part of the We Are Open art and design project in Middlesbrough on Thursday December 17th. This is an ongoing scheme whereby empty shops in the town are handed over to artists and design groups to show off their work.

Running the opening exhibition (where our work will be sold) are friends of the collective Empty Shop, who are at 5 Newport Road (opposite House Of Fraser). The shop opens for business at 10am.

Tumble and Fall Takeover

The collective is spreading its wings and taking up residency on Dennis J Reinmuller's sublime Tumble and Fall webcomic. Dennis has had to put his work on hiatus while he gets to grips with academia, so rather than shut the site down altogether, he's handed the baton on to other artists.

We've had a month of the wonderful Katie Sekelsky's interpretation of T & F, now it's our turn. Rather than ape what's come before, we've twisted the brief somewhat and combined it with our 24-minute comics, taking the "Tumble and..." part from Dennis and selecting the final word at random. Thanks to Gary Bainbridge for taking the reigns on this project on behalf of the group.

To kick off the festivities, here is Andy Waugh's ultraviolent effort. Enjoy!

The Paper Jam Comics Collective are back from the Leeds Thought Bubble convention, having sold lots of comics and chatted to lots of people.

As well as the stall minded by Waugh, Bainbridge and Thompson (which sounds like the worst legal firm ever)...

...there was additional representation on stalls from Jack...

...Ben Clark and Terry Wiley. Add to this the support of non-exhibiting group members Daniel, Lily, Ian Mayor and Oscillating Brow, and it's clear that PJC were out in force.

Small Press Big Mouth 2

Space Monkey, our new anthology (and the first one made for kids), has been reviewed in the latest installment of the Small Press Big Mouth podcast.

As well as giving us her own thoughts, reviewer Stacey Whittle had her daughter Alice come on and give an eloquent summary of what she liked about the book. Coming from our target audience, this was praise gladly recieved. Thank you ladies!

Being marked out for particular acclaim were strips by PJC members Ben Clark, Oscillating Brow, Paul Thompson, Lily Daniels and Faye Stacey.

Thought Bubble 2009

The PJC collective will be out in force at the Leeds Thought Bubble convention on Saturday 21st October. Manning the stall and selling their goods will be Andy Waugh, Gary Bainbridge and Paul Thompson, with support/derision from Jack Fallows (who'll be manning his own table) and Mike (who'll be running the Travelling Man table). Collective member Terry Wiley will also have a table somewhere in the area, adding to an already formidable North East contingency.

This will be the convention debut of our newest anthology Space Monkey and will also be a chance for people outside of the North East to pick up copies of our previous titles (providing stocks last). In edition to these, there are exciting individual titles to pick up. Jack and Gary are both launching new works - the first part of Jack's new series The Big Bang and Gary's new tome Grainger Street. Meanwhile, Andy has two new comics - including the TB exclusive Blether - and a painting (or two) to sell. All this, plus the usual titles from the collective and friends.

If you're coming along, please stop by and say "hi" to the guys (or "hello" if you're that way inclined) and show your support. Mexican waves are always encouraged.

SPACE MONKEY Anthology

The Paper Jam Comic Collective are back with another anthology!

The untitled kids-themed anthology mentioned back in September now has a name (Space Monkey, or to give its proper title Space Monkey, featuring: Squids, Bicycles, Cowboys, Skeletons, Bogeys, Dinosaurs, UFOs, Galleons, Loners, Emos, Aliens, Accidents, Bulls, Electricians, Pizza Pirates, Missing Heads, Secret Codes, Astronauts, Cheese, Massive Plants, Toilets, Tortoises and Bob...And That) and a form, being that it looks like what you see up above. The cover image is by Dan Gilmore and the whole thing was painstakingly put together and shaped into loveliness by Paul Thompson.

It works both as a fantastic kids comic (with all the laughs and excitement of our usual work but with none of the rude words) and further proof that Newcastle is a hotbed of comics talent. It is truly the nicest-looking anthology we've put out to date.

Space Monkey is available now from Travelling Man Newcastle and shortly via the site for the modest price of £3. We're in the midst of trying to get an online shop set up, but in the meantime if you want a copy and you don't live nearby drop us an e-mail and we will sort it out.

Durham Book Festival

Whitley Bay WordPlay Festival

KIDS Anthology

Hello Everyone,

We are putting together our new anthology very soon. The idea is as loose as ever - Kid Friendly. There aren't very strict rules in terms of theme, but for content we need to make sure there are no swear words, no scenes of a violent or explicit nature (to the degree that isn't suitable for kids, - i.e. a spaceman shooting an alien's head off might be okay, but the spaceman proceeding to have full naked sex with the Star Princess afterwards might be a step too far). By the same token, try not to patronise or dumb anything down either, think about what you loved as a kid and bear the themes/content of that stuff in mind when you're creating.

The deadline for submissions will be Thursday 24th September and the finished product will be A4 size (A3 sheets folded in half). It will have a full-colour cover and black and white interiors. Each contributor has two pages to play with, so if you're writing and drawing your own story it can be either one or two pages long, or if you're working with somebody else it can be one to four pages long and so on. We have some space for colour submissions, but not much, so if this is something that would interest you drop me a line ASAP (tmne_smallpress@yahoo.co.uk) and we'll figure something out from there. Please don't create something in full colour until you've dropped me a line as we might not be able to use it!

As for submitting work, you can bring your original artwork (A3 or A4 only) in to the shop or to one of the meetings as long as it's in a folder or plastic sleeve or anything else that will prevent it from getting damaged in somebody's bag. Alternatively you can scan it in and send it as a 300dpi JPEG to the above e-mail address. Be sure to leave a blank border around your pages so that nothing gets cut off during printing and make sure your text is legible, not least of all because children will be reading it, but also because it will shrink if you're working on A3 and it might disappear during printing if your lines are really fine.

The last Comics Evening before the deadline is this coming Thursday 10th September from 6:30pm onwards at Travelling Man Newcastle, and we'll be using the opportunity to share our ideas with the group before the big day, so bring any and all scraps of paper or abstract notions you might have!

So you all know who Stacey Whittle is, right? She's the local writer and small press appreciator who has an impressive number of writing gigs and geeky affiliates under her belt, and is an asset to our own humble collective. Not only does she HAND BAKE cakes every time we have a launch party, but also collects the anthologies and the work of our individual members. This means she's either A) A really swell person, B) Genuinely impressed with the local small press scene or C) both of the above. And let me tell ya, if you want to go home with the car, the home media station and the fabulous assistant I'd get those fingers on the buzzers for C. Anyway, my excuse for this plug is because she gave the Robots anthology a mention on her brand-spanking-new podcast Small Press Big Mouth, go there and have a listen, it's jolly good fun.

Next on the agenda is to post a wee calendar so people know when we're meeting. All Comics Evenings are free and happen at 6:30pm on alternate Thursday nights at the Travelling Man comic shop on Grainger Street in Newcastle. You need to be 18+ to attend and you don't need to be a massive comic fan either. It's very rare that any of that isn't the case, but if it isn't I'll be sure to let you know. Anyway, the events this coming month are:

Robots Launch

Might I be the first to suggest a roaring round of applause to all people involved with the Robots... and that launch party last Friday, which was an unfathomable success. We got tons of people down, all of which seemed to have a ruddy good time. The antho was (and IS!) awesome, bands and films were awesome and the cakes were yummy. We'll soon be posting our first ever anthology as a free downloadable PDF from this 'ere site, and we'll also be re-printing the others long passed and setting up little PayPal buttons so people from the far reaches of planet earth can check out our back catalogue. Watch this space!

In other news PJCC member and Squares frontman Daniel Clifford just scored himself a feature on the Shields Gazette website and bigged us up like a true gentleman. You'll also see pictures of the man himself in a fashionable spangly space suit if you check out the new photo slideshow I've posted as a testament to our grand accomplishments... just over there >>>

Star and Shadow Map

During the promotion of this launch event I've had this question posed to me a lot: "So where's this going on then?" and replied with this: "The fabulous Star and Shadow Cinema, of course!" to which I've had the reply: "Oh yeah, where's that then?" So to remedy this problem here is a map for your convenience:

And for the urban explorer, here's a little step by step on how to get there without a car:
1) Get the Metro to Manors Station
2) When you get out the station take a right
3) You'll pass a pub, a mattress shop, some houses and church among other things. The Star and Shadow is right before you hit Byker Bridge, oppostie the Tanners pub. It's about 5 minutes walk from Manors Station.

Or for music fans... you know where The Cluny is? It's at the top of that steep bank that The Cluny is at the bottom of. So there you are, you can't go wrong.

'ROBOTS...AND THAT' Anthology

I spent a few hours downstairs in the shop yesterday (on my day off, mind!) trying to make sense of the reams of paper with our anthology printed on, and although I was mostly unfolding the 750 A3 sheets that the printer decided he would fold but leave the other 750 unfolded, thus making the task of guillotining and stapling twice as long winded, I did manage to assemble about 5 copies. To anyone planning on helping out, your job should be a lot easier now that I've sorted out all that tedious monotony. But for my suffering, behold the spangly thing. It's wonderful.

LAUNCH EVENT

Right then,

The launch event for the 5th Paper Jam Comics Collective anthology Robots... And That will be hosted at the fabulous Star & Shadow Cinema in Newcastle, and festivities will commence at 7:30pm. Watch this space for updates on a possible all-day faire too. It will cost the general public £3 if they're a member of the cinema, or an extra £1 membership fee if not. There will be live music, films on show, comic stalls, cakes, sweets and of course the fabled item for everyone's enjoyment. The date to put into your calendar is: 29th May. Tell everyone you know, we're a little further afield this time, so good promo will be essential! But rest assured, this will be our best anthology, and indeed best launch event yet.

Maker Faire II

This was our fine stall, which I'm sure you'll agree is rather swish (if you ignore my idiot self).

The BBC were building some kind of weather robot and wanted a "weather cock" for the top, so I drew this image which Andy Payne of Hexray made into the 3D cut-out, which was then mounted onto the robot itself. Andy's wife took these photos, so thank you Hexray!

Maker Faire

Today myself, Gary, Andy and Alex all manned a stall at the Centre for Life's Maker Fair. The event was organized by the centre itself and Craft magazine, and there were some unbelievable things going on - mechanical horses, engined powered skate-boards, an 8ft walking, talking, singing robot and a tweet-powered bubble machine to name a few. In amongst that there were a few humble stalls such as ours, where we had tons of pens, paper and arty materials ready for the general public to come and make comics. Coinciding with this we chewed everyone's ear off about this lovely collective, and had the following documents on the table:

This was a double-sided A4 sheet folded in half to make a 'booklet' -feel free to print one off!

These were our comic templates for people to fill in the blanks (the one on the top right is the fine work of Andy Waugh), and of course we had plain paper for the more adventurous types. We'll be back there tomorrow, and I intend to take photos of the stall and scan in a few of the strips people drew and contributed to our "gallery" for your enjoyment, so watch out for post number two!

Robots ...And That (submissions outline)

The collective are planning their fifth comics anthology, set to be released in May, and we want everyone to get involved! As we are growing day by day, we thought it might be useful to have a submission outline on the blog for people to have a look at from the comfort of their own homes. Gary Bainbridge took the liberty of putting this into words for us:

Robots... And That
Think Science-fiction, science, fiction, science versus fiction, robots, androids, cyborgs, the final frontier, the impossible made possible, nanotechnology, contradictions of the laws of physics, The Time Machine, holograms, Battlestar Galactica, Back to the Future, space travel, time travel, Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers, Brave New World, Space, Star prefixes, Nineteen Eighty Four, Logan’s Run, aliens, humans, other, artificial intelligence, artificial stupidity, the living dead, Tron, cryogenics, Ghost in the Shell, The Tempest, alternative timelines, parallel universes, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, future technologies, yellow writing in space, faster than light, obscenely complicated techno-babble followed up with a simple metaphor to explain it, telepathy, discovery, utopias, dystopias, the human condition, the alien condition, or just really tenuously feature something that vaguely resembles any of the above in a completely different kind of story.

GUIDELINES, RULES AND ADVICE:

We’re going to be having a new format for the anthology this time around, so listen up. Work on A4, but draw a horizontal line 2 ½ inches (63mm) from the bottom of the page, and imagine that line is where the page ends. So, you’ll be working in a 210x234mm rectangle. Leave a 10mm margin so none of your lovely drawings get cropped in the printing!

The rule of thumb is Two-Pages-Per-Head, which means if you're working alone, you have 1-2 pages to work with. If you're collaborating with one other person, you have 1-4 pages to work with, another two and you have 1-6, you get the idea!

Please let us know as soon as possible how many pages you will be submitting, so we can get a total page count.

When you’re done, either a bring your originals (in a plastic wallet or folder) down to a Comics Evening, hand it over to Jack or Mike during shop hours, or if you're equipped with some fancy technology, scan it in yourself, save it as a 300dpi PDF file and e-mail it to tmne_smallpress@yahoo.co.uk

If you are handing an original over, ensure that you work in black ink on white paper, and that all text is clear and readable, even if it’s reduced to half size. No one has the time to sort this out for you!

Make sure you include any information about yourself that you want people to know - i.e. the title of your strip, your name, website etc. You can do this either on the comic itself or write it down on a piece of paper and include it with your submission/e-mail it.

We're planning a colour cover this time, who draws it (if not all of us!) will be decided at the meetings, so bring down any and all ideas you might have and share them with the group!

Thursday 30th April 2009 (there will be a launch event in May, with bands, sweets, comics and tons of other genres of fun)

I've been promising this for a while, so here it is. Some images from the launch night, the poster, and Mark Pembrey's beautiful spoken word piece from the evening > Clicky. Photos were taken by Siobhan Richardson and Yvette Bessels. No photos of the masses of sweets and cakes unfortunately, but they were there, promise! When we get more copies of the anthology printed up they'll be for sale from this blog, so watch this space...

Grettings all.

This should hopefully be the hub of the bi-weekly Comics Evening hosted at Newcastle's Travelling Man store. From it's beginnings 2+ years ago we've created 4 anthology comics, drawn God knows how many 24 minute comics, discussed all that's right and wrong with comics these days, and consumed more Amaretto and discounted Greggs sticky buns than is strictly recommended.

We've released the past two anthology comics at popular gigs also under the '...And That' banner where like-minded people have gathered to listen to music, eat cakes and do comics too. So this blog hopes to document these and any other kind of activities the gang get up to.

Yeah, this is neatly summarised over in the introduction but... you need a first post, yeah?
